Wiki Widgets FAQ

[edit] MediaWiki already has an extensions mechanism so why do we need Wiki Widgets?

Wiki Widgets are:

  • convenient:: the framework provides a convenient interface to a number of facilities that simplify writing complex extensions
  • discoverable: users can easily find out which widgets are installed and learn how to use them
  • efficient: Widgets are loaded on demand; pages that don't use them incur little overhead

See Why Wiki Widgets for more information.

[edit] Where do I download the Graphviz Widget?

The GraphViz widget is currently (very) alpha. I'm using it to experiment with the idea of Widgets that generate content that is not part of the page (typically images) and working out how to handle the caching of such images, where they should be stored - things like that.

If you can live with alpha status drop me a line (andy AT hexten DOT net) and you can have a copy of the code - but note that it's quite likely to change extensively.
