WBT-201
From Hexten
The current version of gpsbabel (1.3.4) supports the WBT-201 / G-Rays 2.
The following patched builds of gpsbabel 1.3.4beta are available:
Contents |
[edit] Linux
- gpsbabel-1.3.4beta-wbt201-feisty-i386.tar.gz - Ubuntu Feisty (Intel) (951K)
- gpsbabel.gz - Debian Etch (Intel) (970k)
Thanks to Rainer Dorsch for the Debian Etch build.
To get your WBT-201 used under Linux you first have to connect it via Bluetooth or USB. You can check the connection via cat /dev/rfcomm0 (Bluetooth, bind to /dev/rfcomm0 in this example) or cat /dev/ttyUSB0. If you use WBT-201 for the first time, you may need to exposure it on at a place where it can find enough satellites and wait around 13 minutes to initialize.

[edit] Bluetooth
For Bluetooth, first pair your Mac with the GPS using passcode 0000. Then in Bluetooth preference pane, select 'Edit Serial Ports' to the following
- Device Service: SPP slave
- Port: RS-232
- Uncheck Require pairing for security
- Uncheck Show in network preferences
The device will now show up as /dev/cu.WBT201-SPPslave-1 on your machine.
You can also try Parallels, but according to their customer support, you cannot use the internal Bluetooth module, but an external USB dongle should work. See GPSBabel's wbt format for command support.
[edit] USB
For USB, you may need USB-to-UART drivers. PPC drivers are available here: http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorial/USB-Drivers/MAC/ or from SiLabs directly. According to this page at agri-vision.nl, you may need to edit your /System/Library/Extensions/SLAB_USBtoUART.kext/Contents/Info.plist to provide correct vendorID and productID information as provided by your System Profiler.
Intel drivers are available here: http://www.surveyor.com/srvdownload/OSX-V1_02-beta.dmg.
[edit] Possible problem with Intel driver?
I just installed the Intel driver on my MacBook Pro. With no device plugged in the machine became noticeably unresponsive - cursor movement and window transitions became jerky. I disabled the driver, rebooted and the problem went away. I can't say for sure that it wasn't a one-off but it's might be something to be aware of --AndyArmstrong 13:59, 22 July 2007 (BST)
[edit] Binaries
- gpsbabel-1.3.4beta-macintel.zip - Mac OS (Intel) (848Kb)
This is a binary build from Yaw Anokwa for Intel Macs and can be used to transfer GPS data from the WBT201 over Bluetooth.
- gpsbabel-1.3.4beta-wbt201-macos-ppc.tar.gz - Mac OS (PPC) (1.1M)
A binary build from Hexten.net for PPC Macs. May have issues with Bluetooth timeouts. Your mileage may vary.
If you wish to compile your own from cvs, make sure you have X11 installed and use the following.
./configure --with-expathdr=/usr/X11R6/include --with-libexpat=/usr/X11R6/lib && sudo make install
Finally, you can use the patched Windows binary (see below) in Windows inside Parallels on Mac OS X. This will only work with USB or an external USB USB dongle.
[edit] Windows
- gpsbabel-1.3.4beta.patched.win32.zip - Windows (323k)
Thanks to Skye Otten for building the Windows version.
See WBT201 Release Notes for more information about this release.
[edit] Configuration Tool
Jonathan Hudson has created application (Ruby-GTK2 and C command line) that allows the WBT-201 / G-Rays 2 to be configured.
- WBT-201 Viewer - project page
- grays2cmd-0.02-macintel.zip - Mac OS (Intel) from Yaw Anokwa (7KB)

[edit] Credits
Thanks are due to Semsons for providing three different Wintec units for testing. In my experience they're a great company to deal with. If you're buying a WBT-200 or 201 I would recommend checking them out.
[edit] Donate!
Not to me - to the gpsbabel project. Robert tells me that although there are thousands of Mac users downloading gpsbabel he's had very little support from the Mac community. So if you find gpsbabel useful please donate a small amount of money to help support the project.
